Ingenuity, Quality | Xu Heyi wins "2016 IKA Award"

On September 21, at the ANQ Annual Conference in Vladivostok, Russia, Xu Heyi, Party Secretary and Chairman of BAIC Group (BAIC) won the "2016 IKA Award.” He was the only Chinese winner of the award in 2016, as well as China's sixth winner ever. Previous winners include Liu Yuanzhang, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The "IKA Award" is an international quality award set up in 2010 by the Asian Network for Quality (ANQ, founded in 2003 and comprising 17 national/regional quality organizations) in recognition of the individuals who have made outstanding contributions to Asia's quality work in quality management theory and practical operation. In quality management system construction, quality culture building and whole value chain quality control of major automotive groups, Xu has created innovative ideas, methods and models of group-based quality control, and made remarkable achievements.

In his acceptance speech, Xu said he was honored to win the award. This is not only a great honor for him, but a high level of recognition for BAIC's quality work. He extended heartfelt thanks to the China Association for Quality, ANQ and all the judges, as well as all his colleagues for their great efforts.

He noted that BAIC has improved in development quality as it has grown: in 1965, BAIC developed the BJ212 off-road vehicle, establishing a standardized vehicle development and manufacturing process; in 1982, BAIC established China's first JV automaker in association with Chrysler, bringing itself up to international quality standards; afterwards BAIC worked with Hyundai and Daimler to fully introduce internationally advanced quality standards and quality management systems; in 2009, BAIC acquired Saab's intellectual property to build an independent brand.

BAIC has learned the standardization concept of ISO, focused on the "group" strategy, explored and established a group-based quality control model, given play to the role of the group management platform, established the concept of "taking quality as the soul,” advocated the BAIC craftsmanship spirit of "toughness, persistence, concentration and perfection,” and advanced group-based quality management. By establishing an effective quality management system and an ever-improving quality innovation system, BAIC has ensured completely standardized operation and quality control for all employees throughout the whole value chain and the full product lifecycle. Through persistent efforts, BAIC has continued to improve in group-based and standardized quality management. Today BAIC has grown into an international enterprise ranked 160th on the Fortune Global 500.

In 2015, BAIC won the "1st Quality Management Award of the Beijing Municipal People's Government.” Afterwards, Chairman Xu Heyi successively won the National Quality Award for Individuals (the title of "China Excellent Quality Person"), the 9th Yuan Baohua Enterprise Management Award and the "IKA Award.” These are undoubtedly full recognitions of BAIC's group-based quality practice and Xu's outstanding contribution to quality management over the years.
